Kemetism (also Kemeticism, both from Egyptian kmt or Kemet, the native name of Ancient Egypt; another name is Neterism or Netjerism, from ntr (Coptic noute) "deity", "godhead") is Egyptian Neopaganism, the contemporary revival of Ancient Egyptian religion (which also spread throughout Europe in the Late Antiquity) emerging from the 1970s onwards. Followers call themselves Kemetic(s). The religion has an organised presence in the United States, France and the Czech Republic. There are several main groups, each of which take a different approach to their beliefs, ranging from eclectic to reconstructionistic. However, all of these can be identified as belonging to three strains: traditional "Orthodox" Kemetism (adopting a philological approach, also Kemetic Orthodoxy), Black Kemetism (emerged amongst black people in the United States and France, and related to afrocentric ideologies), and Neo-Atenism. |
